Pattern of Life Data Project
Saint John, NB
For Release: May 5th, 2016
Through the collaborative efforts of T4G, Cisco, HotSpot Merchant Solutions and Enterprise Saint John, the Pattern of Life Data project wheels have begun to turn for Uptown Saint John.
HotSpot Merchant Solutions has spent the last three years harnessing the power of sensor data to build a stronger mobile parking and consumer incentives platform. By deploying a beacon network throughout the Uptown Saint John core, HotSpot connects drivers with their favourite businesses and businesses with their best customers. Within this network and through real-time analytics, lies much untapped potential that HotSpot believes many players can and should use.
“Parking is a unique use case that made a lot of sense to marry with the beacon network. It allowed us to build and test hands-free parking validation, while testing the much larger adjacent potential to speak directly to consumers preferences”, said Erin Flood, HotSpot Merchant Solutions, COO.
The Pattern of Life project purpose is to better analyze and understand both vehicular and pedestrian traffic patterns across the Uptown Saint John area. The data collected will illustrate traffic flow patterns, and provide visualization and trend analyses on the impact of these movements on the local economy across many sectors; including retail, entertainment, restaurant and tourism. The results will drive and inform infrastructure investments, provide an understanding of the relative performance of city streetscapes, and allow for the modeling of the impact of new ideas based on historical information for any given geographic location.
The Pattern of Life data project is just the first of many that will now seek to educate citizens, businesses and government on the opportunity derived from the deployment of sensor networks. T4G, the project’s analytics partner, offers the perfect mix of both business intelligence and data analysis that the project consortium requires. Cisco, is leading with its Smart Cities program and is the perfect partner for this project.
T4G’s Cathy Simpson, has been instrumental to the project’s success, and has been actively working on the larger scale Community Data strategy that aims to put Saint John on the map as a national leader in the use of big data analytics.
“Saint John will emerge as an open, smart and connected region that attracts new companies, investment, and partners who want to innovate and build on top of the deep and vast infrastructure of people, processes, data, and technology. “- Cathy Simpson, T4G, VP Government Sector.
In the partnership announced today, HotSpot Merchant Solutions will contribute their existing beacon network data sets and infrastructure; T4G will develop tools and identify insights from the data collected; Cisco, the world’s leader in networking, will contribute to any further expansion of the WIFI infrastructure as deemed necessary.
The Pattern of Life data project was brought to life through Enterprise Saint John’s efforts in creating a more open, smart and connected data strategy for Saint John.
